Studs & sizing

Two things decide whether a boot lasts a season or three months: buying the right soleplate for the ground you play on, and getting the size right the first time. Here's how we do it.

Soleplates, plainly

Firm Ground

Natural grass, dry to slightly soft

Bladed or conical studs moulded into the plate. The default for match pitches in Malaysia. Do not wear these on turf — the plate is stiff and the studs cannot spread the load.

3G / 4G long-pile artificial grass

More studs, shorter and hollow, so pressure spreads across the foot on unforgiving synthetic bases. Saves your joints and your soleplate warranty.

FG/AG

Firm Ground / Artificial Grass

Both grass and 3G

A hybrid plate that legitimately handles both. If you play league on grass and small-side on synthetic, this is the one pair to buy.

Turf

Short-pile astro, sand-filled turf, cages

A rubber outsole covered in small nubs. No studs to catch, no plate to snap. What most casual KL sessions actually need.

Futsal courts, sports halls

Flat non-marking gum rubber for grip on polished hardwood. Zero traction on grass — indoor only.

The one rule

If most of your football is small-side on astro or in a cage, buy TF — not FG. FG studs on short-pile turf is the fastest way to wreck a plate and your ankles.

Size conversion

We list everything in UK sizes because that's how boots arrive in Malaysia. Measure your foot flat against a wall, heel to longest toe, and match the centimetres.

How each brand fits

Nike: Mercurial and Phantom run narrow and snug. If you are between sizes or wide-footed, go half up.
adidas: F50 and Predator run true to size with a slightly roomier toe box. Take your usual UK size.
Puma: Future is the most forgiving of the lot thanks to the adaptive lacing. True to size.
Mizuno: Japanese lasts run short. Most players need half a size up from their Nike size.
New Balance: Available in wide fittings and generally the roomiest. True to size, or half down if you like it tight.
